# Security

> Turn on two-factor authentication so every sign-in asks for a code from your authenticator app.

Two-factor authentication adds a second step at sign-in: your password, then a six-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone (1Password, Google Authenticator, Authy, or any app that supports time-based codes).

## Turn it on

1. Open **Settings** from the workspace menu and choose **Security**.
2. Click **Turn on**.
3. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app. If you can't scan, enter the setup key shown next to it by hand.
4. Type the six-digit code the app shows and click **Verify and turn on**.

From the next sign-in, Memo asks for a code after your password. This applies to Google sign-in too.

## Signing in with a code

After your password (or Google), Memo shows a **Two-factor code** screen. Enter the current code from your app. Codes change every 30 seconds; if one is rejected, wait for the next one.

## Turn it off

Open **Security**, click **Turn off**, and enter a current code to confirm.

## Lost your device?

Two-factor cannot be bypassed from the sign-in screen. Ask another admin of your workspace to remove the factor for you, then set it up again on your new device.

## Admins

Memo's admin area can require two-factor for every admin. Once it does, an admin account without a verified factor cannot open it.
